Solution
Help! Final Fantasy VII always crashes at the Chocobo Races at the Gold Saucer

If you are playing Final Fantasy VII and the game abruptly crashes at the Chocobo Races you are most likely playing the game on an unsupported Operating System, such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Final Fantasy VII will always crash at the Chocobo Races when playing under Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The only officially supported solution is to play the game under Windows 95 or Windows 98. The crash does not occur under Windows ME, but ME is an unsupported OS for FFVII.

However, as an unofficial, unsupported solution we suggest trying the Unofficial patch offered in this Archived Topic from the Eidos Final Fantasy VII Forum. We recommend reading through the information and suggestions in that archive before trying the Unofficial FFVII Chocobo Patch

Many players have been able to get past the Chocobo problem by following the suggestions therein. (thanks to jedwin!! also Threesixty, 3car & SirCanealot - GM)

Please note that THERE IS NO OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED SOLUTION to this problem, other than to play FFVII on Windows 95 or 98. If you continue to experience problems in Final Fantasy VII playing under Windows 2000 or Windows XP after installing the unofficial patch we have no further suggestions.
FFVII is known to experience other problems related to playing it on Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and we do not recommend or support playing the game under either Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
